Annie Goodner

Critical practice

Annie Goodner is a writer, critic and teacher living in Amsterdam. Next to writing reviews and essays for various international art publications, Annie is the co-editor of Tangents: an art review and writing platform focused on the Dutch scene.

In her teaching, Annie is interested in the interactions between art making and art writing (some might call this critical practice). Art criticism—in all its glorious and frustrating forms—is a foundational material in the classroom, where Annie likes to emphasize the ways in which writing can embrace heterodox styles, more lyricism, and a rejection of entrenched convention.

After receiving degrees in art history from Smith College and Emory university in the United States, Annie relocated to the Netherlands to work with the research group “Photographic Traditions in South African Popular Modernities” at Universiteit Leiden, and later received an MA in Critical Studies from the Sandberg Instituut.
