Individual Study Track (IST)

Part of the Bachelor programmes at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (KABK ) is the Individual Study Track (IST) that focuses on the discovery and development of students' fascinations and preferences and their personal artistic attitude.

IST is an excellent opportunity for students to discover their personal potential and ambitions and customise their studies accordingly.

The Individual Study Track includes the following possibilities:

  • KABK IST Labs (Research Labs & Material Labs)
  • Electives through the Academy of Creative and Performing Arts
  • Self-initiated projects

KABK IST Labs (Research Labs & Material Labs)

The IST-plan is an excellent opportunity for you to customize your studies. KABK organizes a wide range of projects that can be joined in the context of IST. We have divided our offer in two types of projects, namely the Research labs and the Material labs.

Research labs
The research labs are experimental and research based interdisciplinary working groups, offered by one or more departments and/ or research domains. In the labs, the research orientation of the programs is further explored and deepened by encouraging students to work together on particular themes with students and teachers from other disciplines.

Material labs
When it comes to thinking with your hands, the workshops are the place to be. Experimentation and coincidence start with execution; with doing. Your intuition and the intuition of your hands, can be key ingredients in a creative process. In the material labs teachers and workshop instructors share their expertise with you.

An overview of the IST offer for current students can be found on the portal.

Electives through the Academy of Creative and Performing Arts

As a student in the main phase of your studies at the Royal Academy of Art, it is possible to follow electives, at the Royal Conservatoire or the Leiden University, through the Academy of Creative and Performing Arts.

Up-to-date information about the courses can be found in the e-Prospectus of Leiden University.

Self-initiated projects

Your own project proposal?

In some cases, departments give students the opportunity to develop their own project. If you have an interest that you think that could function as a broadening and deepening of your study, you can discuss your idea with your IST coach.
