Second year students Interactive / Media / Design present OFF-LOOM
A group of second year students of the
OFF-LOOM is an exhibition showcasing contemporary artistic interpretations of several collection items involving the use of textile crafts spanning the history of over thousand years from medieval times until the 21st century.
Young designers gained access to these publications, learned about the socio-cultural context behind them and reflected critically on the specific stories they found currently relevant through an intensive research and creative process leading to the production of individual works. A number of them used traditional methods of embroidery, knitting or crochet based on different, sometimes unconventional materials; the other revisited the aesthetics of needlework with other means, involving newer technologies such as 3D modelling, electronics, creative coding, animation and film. Some strived to create immersive, interactive experiences for the viewer, through installation or performance art, evoking a discourse on e.g. colonial past, the absent histories of the underrepresented, our relationship to textile and fashion traditions across different cultures or the emergence of new manual skills in digital times.
