About us

The Royal Academy of Art (KABK) forms together with the Royal Conservatoire (KC) the University of the Arts, The Hague. We offer HBO bachelor and master education, as well as preparatory courses. There is an intensive collaboration with Leiden University: students can take electives on both sides, there is a PhD program. The University of the Arts is located at two locations in the center of The Hague.

The Bachelor Graphic Design department trains students to be critical thinkers and versatile practitioners who create integrated concepts for visual communication. The bachelor programme is well-known for its high-level, thorough, and comprehensive education, investigative and conceptual teaching method, and great reputation in type design and typography. Students are encouraged to create solutions to tomorrow's design problems within the fast evolving new-media landscape, as well as to address questions about the social duties of the contemporary designer.

The curriculum is organised around five practice-based subjects: Design, Interaction, Image, Coding, and Typography, with courses like design and media theory, and philosophy laying the groundwork for a comprehensive framework of references.

Furthermore, the programme allows students to broaden and develop their interests by allowing them to take electives in research, type design, professional practice skills, and an academy-wide study trajectory. It enables each individual to fully develop their skills within an inclusive work environment in which everyone may feel valued.
