Dutch artist Lily van der Stokker is based in Amsterdam. In the 1980’s she ran a gallery in New York’s Lower East Side, and has spent her life between the two cities.
Her immersive wall paintings explore the visual languages of the frivolous, the girly, and the decorative in ways that question received notions of both ‘good taste’ and broach topics such as domestic labour and emotion.
Van der Stokker had a retrospective in the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam in 2018, and has shown extensively throughout the world, notably at The Hammer Museum, Los Angeles in 2015, The New museum, New York in 2013, and Tate, St Ives in 2012.
