Jasper Coppes

Jasper Coppes is a core tutor for theory and writing at the MA Artistic Research, and supports research workshops. He is a visual artist living in Amsterdam, and studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam, Glasgow School of Art, and the Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht.

His practice unfolds around the transformation of spaces – through precise gestures and détournements that challenge the definition and function of sites. While rooted in active field research, Coppes explores the material and immaterial conditions that shape such spaces.

He creates both films and large-scale architectural installations, his works often being positioned as silent obstacles, in need of activation yet perpetually present. An important part of Jasper’s practice is a continual conversation and engagement with other artists through written projects, artworks, and salons. He often also collaborates with fellow Dutch artist Stein Verhoeff.

Jasper is a frequent guest artist at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, the ABKM - Academy of visual art in Maastricht, and the MLitt program of Glasgow School of Art.

Recent exhibitions and screenings include Rietveld, TV, Amsterdam; Galerie van Gelder, Amsterdam; ‘Vertiges’ Le Micro Onde, Paris; ‘All The Way Back’ New Shelter Plan, Copenhagen; The International Film Festival Rotterdam; ‘The Book Lovers’, Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts, New York; Oude Kerk, Amsterdam; ‘Neurath’s Boat’, FruttaGallery, Rome; ‘The Fox’s Legacy’ MANIFESTA 9; Jeanine Hofland Contemporary Art, Amsterdam; ‘In The First Circle’ Fundació Antoni Tàpies, Barcelona; and ‘Fluiten in het Donker’ De Appel Arts Centre, Amsterdam.
