Clare Butcher

Clare Butcher is a curator and art educator based in Amsterdam. Originally from Zimbabwe and then South Africa, Clare completed her Masters at the Centre for Curating the Archive, University of Cape Town, during which time she also initiated and ran the pilot Annex Residency Programme in collaboration with the South African National Gallery. She graduated from the De Appel Curatorial Program, Amsterdam in 2009.

Most recently Clare was the coordinator of Education for Documenta 14, Kassel. You can read an interview on Clare’s thoughts on art education. In this interview Clare states that she thinks ‘kitchens make the best spaces for discussion, about art and the many tangents relating to it’ and often involves cooking and food in her educational projects.

Clare currently teaches Reading Writing and Research at the MA Education program of the Piet Zwart Institute, Rotterdam. She previously taught at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam, and has been a guest curator at The Van Abbe Museum, Eindhoven.
