KABK at Liberation Festival The Hague - What does liberation mean to you?

On 5 May the Netherlands celebrates its annual Liberation Day. Across the country, major cities will host vibrant festivals drawing large crowds. In The Hague, the celebration takes place just across the street at the Malieveld – a free festival open to all.

This year, KABK will be present with an interactive installation by alum Akash Kumar inviting you to fold your own story and share your personal story of freedom.

A Collective Exchange

This interactive installation invites you to explore your personal understanding of freedom, release, and transformation. With nothing more than paper and your imagination, you are encouraged to express your thoughts through drawing, writing, or doodling. Then, fold your creation into any origami form you like. No artistic experience is needed, just curiosity and an open heart.

Once folded, your piece becomes part of a larger communal structure. In exchange, you’re invited to select an origami creation made by someone else. In doing so, you receive another person’s reflection, another voice in the conversation on liberation.

By participating, you are both offering something of yourself and receiving a perspective from another, an act of empathy, solidarity, and shared humanity. As the structure grows throughout the day, it becomes a living archive of what freedom means to this diverse community at this unique moment in time.

Fold a story, share a gesture, and discover how others express their freedom.

Akash graduated from the Master Industrial Design at the Royal Academy of Art with the project CRAFTING CONTAGIOUS CONNECTIONS - Pedagogies of the Hand in 2024.
