25 years ago, the Netherlands became the first country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage. Now, to celebrate that revolutionary moment a commemorative coin has been unveiled by the Royal Dutch Mint, designed by KABK alum Koos Breen, and featuring typeface designed by another KABK alum, Rutherford Craze.
Job Cohen presented the coin at Stopera in Amsterdam, the very place where equal marriage was celebrated — and Cohen himself performed the first ceremonies — a quarter of a century ago.
KABK alums commemorate equality
The new coin, designed by Graphic Design alum Koos Breen (2014) highlights the word ‘Iedereen’ (everyone). The coin also features interconnected rings to symbolize marriage, and a rainbow to represent the LGBTQI+ community. The typeface used on the coin, MD Nichrome, was created by LGBTQ designer Rutherford Craze, who graduated from MA Type and Media at KABK in 2019.
Eye-catching design
The rainbow featured on the coin will be in full colour, the first time in years that an element like this has been included, meaning the coin, once it goes into circulation, will be truly eye-catching. The coin is legal tender and will be available in various versions. The Silver Fiver, worth 5 euros, the Golden Tenner, worth 10 euros, and a number of limited editions that will feature special packaging.
The commemorative coin for equal marriage is available on the website of the Royal Dutch Mint.
