Loek van Vliet (1988) graduated from the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague in 2010. Since then, he works on long- term photographic projects about the experience of landscape. He focusses on the interaction between human- ity and nature, and the perception of landscape for the viewer. Through these works he conveys what it is like to be in the landscape. Mostly the direct experience of walking through the landscape is his starting point for his gaze, supported by the knowledge that makes the landscape legible. His works contain a complex use of digital montage to grasp the experience of the landscape fully and to enhance its image.
In his photography Van Vliet uses composition, colour and shapes, that call upon the association with the past and historical painting. This results in exhibitions and books like: The Limes, the Landscape as Palimpsest; Earthly Windows, the experience of the European landscape throughout the ages; Sacred Grounds, quiet areas in the Netherlands and Flanders.
His work is amongst others part of the Rijkscollection, the collection of the Dutch Senate, and the collection of the ministry of Foreign Affairs, all in the Hague, and the Art Collection of the University of Leiden.
Besides this photographic practice in landscape, he has been working in the field of post-production for over twenty years. Working in a wide range of photographic practices from World Press Photo winning documentary photographers, but also with other visual artists and working in advertisement, editorial and commercial fashion photography.
