Céline Hurka is an independent type designer and artist based in The Hague, NL. In her practice, she aims to challenge and disrupt conventions that have dominated for centuries.
For Céline, letters are cultural signifiers that carry meaning beyond the words they compose. Her typefaces are deeply personal projects, drawing inspiration from her long-standing interest in type history, technological innovation, personal narratives, pop culture, flowers, and universal emotions. In 2023, she launched her own type foundry, using it as a creative playground to develop and release her typefaces.
Through her type design practice, she engages in multidisciplinary collaborations to broaden the field and emphasise the significance of letterforms in both artistic and everyday contexts.
She is a member of the Trixie Collective in The Hague and a programmer for Zefir7 at Stroom The Hague.
Currently, Céline teaches at the Type and Media MA program (Royal Academy of Arts, The Hague) and the LABASAD MA (Barcelona). She has also taught at various other institutions, including EKA Tallinn, FH Münster BA, Konstfack Stockholm, Merz Akademie Stuttgart, and HfG Offenbach. She has presented her work internationally, with appearances at Poster House New York (permanent collection), ATypI Tokyo, Bicepts Marseille, and Typotage Leipzig.
