HATCHING: an exhibition by KABK students at Nest x Club Laak
In this is thirty-fourth edition of One Nest Stand, KABK students respond to Nest’s current exhibition Creation Myths & Other Beginnings. The exhibition takes place on 6 and 7 November at Club Laak.
Where do beginnings start? When exploring creation myths and origin stories from around the world a motif recurs: the cosmic egg. The cosmic egg symbolizes the beginning of the universe. Appearing in at least a dozen cultural traditions, from the Chinese myth of Pangu to West African Pangwe traditions, the egg serves many functions. It may hatch life in its entirety, a singular god, or a chirping bird. Across these stories, it becomes a symbol of birth, potential, and a portal between one world and another.
Through their artistic practices, the students explore what it means to begin. Smoke, doors, clocks, and whistles become portals into a world before time, where, before a night of dancing, there is a moment of becoming.
