The BA Photography department of the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) is currently looking for a Study Coach (0.3 FTE)
Vacancy number: 26-007
What will you do
Studying in the BA Photography programme can be an enriching and transformative process. Study coaches support students in managing their studies throughout the programme. As students develop their conceptual and technical skills in preparation for the professional field, they draw on personal and lived experiences that inform and shape their work. In the process of discovering and developing their identities as makers and individuals, they may encounter study and personal challenges that affect their progress and development.
As a study coach, you support students to navigate their studies, and you are the first point of contact when challenges arise. Your role is to empower students so they can make the most of their studies. This includes supporting the student in developing study skills, as well as mental and emotional resilience and social and communication skills. It is your task as a study coach to create a trustworthy space where both successes and setbacks become stepping stones for growth.
Together with the student, you assess what is needed to support their study progress and provide them with the tools to do so. As part of your role, you monitor and help students maintain an overview of their study trajectory and study management. You address motivation issues or potential study delays. When needed, you provide guidance for mental and emotional challenges such as stress and fear of failure. In cases of exceptional or health-related circumstances, you advise the Head of the Department and student counsellor on adjusted study plans. Study coaches also address group dynamics within student classes, helping to foster cohesion, effective collaboration, and respect for different perspectives.
Working within the department, you understand the specific demands of the curriculum, allowing you to guide students effectively. You conduct both individual and group sessions, supporting students while maintaining strong connections with teachers and staff. Your role goes beyond traditional academic support – you'll help students tap into their authentic selves while preparing them for the realities of their chosen field.
