Rob van den Nieuwenhuijzen

Rob van den Nieuwenhuizen teaches Typography and is class coach at the Bachelor Graphic Design programme of the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (KABK). He is also a visiting graphic designer (professional practice) at the KABK’s Master Artistic Research .

Rob van den Nieuwenhuizen (1980, NL) teaches Typography and is the yearlead of the first year in the Bachelor of Graphic Design of the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (KABK). He is also a visiting graphic designer (professional practice) at the KABK’s Master Artistic Research.

Van den Nieuwenhuizen studied Communication Studies at the University of Applied Sciences in Eindhoven, Media & Culture at the University of Amsterdam, and Graphic Design at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague.

In 2010 he founded the Amsterdam-based design studio DRAWSWORDS. Being an unstoppably curious designer, he has collaborated on everything from design magazines to whole graphic identities and exhibitions; clients include major Dutch museums, artists, publishers, and art schools. More recently, Van den Nieuwenhuizen is exploring ceramics, inspired by archaeological excavation sites, architecture, and experimental music. Van den Nieuwenhuizen was a jury member of the Dutch Design Awards, The Best Dutch Book Designs, and the Art Directors Club The Netherlands. For multiple years he was visiting the design faculty at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, and has been a guest tutor at Pratt Institute, New York; Elisava, Barcelona; Sint Lucas, Antwerp, and several other art academies. As part of the Splinter Group — consisting of colleagues from the academies in The Hague, Marseille, Brussels, and Glasgow — he gives workshops on art education throughout Europe.

In possession of the Certificate Basic Qualification Didactic Competence and Examination (BKE) and of the academy’s participation council (DMR) from 2019 until 2021.
