Critical Inquiry

Winnie Koekelbergh is team leader of the Critical practice team and tutor Critical Inquiry at the painting & printmaking section of the Bachelor Fine Arts programme at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (KABK).

"My interest in visual art was triggered during my exchange year in Mexico City". The artworks of the Mexican muralists – amongst others – fascinated me. Back home I decided to study Art History at Leiden University. Postcolonial discourse and art of the Global South attracted my interest.

After her graduation, Winnie started working as coordinator of the artistic productions at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht, assisting artists and thus getting closely acquainted with the artistic process.

Later on, she switched focus to acquire experience in exhibition platforms and worked as (assistant) curator at Z33 in Hasselt and the Gemeentelijk Museum Schiedam. Her main interest, lies in research and theory and the exchange between the two. Her own research deals with the themes of colonialism and the (im)possibilities of decolonisation.
