Thank you for your interest in the Amalgam programme. For the 2026–2027 academic year, admissions have been paused to further refine the structure of this new and experimental bachelor’s programme in Fine Arts. We look forward to welcoming you and continuing to build meaningful, contemporary artistic practices together in September 2027.
This means that applications will reopen in October 2026. In the meantime, we invite you to:

Part-time programme Amalgam
Amalgam is a part-time Fine Arts programme that merges artistic and non-artistic approaches. It is designed for participants with professional expertise and/or life experience. The programme differs significantly from the full-time version and is specifically developed to be combined with part-time work or other commitments.
Over the course of four years, you will be present at the academy two days a week. Collaboration, exchange of knowledge and experience with fellow students form an essential part of the learning process. Besides the two days at the academy, we expect you to do further research in your spare time and during holidays.
Throughout the programme you will develop your artistic skills and actively build bridges between art and society. You will work with different creative strategies, acquire practical skills in KABK workshops, deepen your theoretical understanding and develop your own studio practice. You will explore how art can manifest in non-artistic contexts and learn how to realise meaningful projects across the breadth of society.
Upon completion of the four-year programme, you will receive the same bachelor's degree as full-time Fine Arts students.
Why choose Fine Arts (part-time)
- Art and creativity are essential to your vision of society.
- You are driven to develop professional work as an artist.
- You want to deepen your artistic skills and gain relevant theoretical knowledge.
- You enjoy collaborating with others and sharing experiences, insights, and knowledge within a peer group.
- You are motivated to broaden your horizons and explore how creativity, community, and professional life can be interwoven.
- You take a mature approach to learning, both individually and in groups, and are capable of initiating projects independently.
- You are drawn to the open, international, hands-on and research-oriented atmosphere of KABK.
Please note that:
- The part-time programme is not open to exchange students.
- A residence permit for part-time students cannot be arranged by the KABK.
Therefore non-EU/EEA candidates are advised to apply for the full-time Fine Arts programme.

The part-time Fine Arts trajectory amounts to 240 ECTS and lasts four academic years.
See below an overview for Years 1, 2, 3 and 4 for the part-time programme and ECTS credits for 2024-2025.
Year 1 consists of a thorough introduction to basic visual and artistic skills, techniques, and knowledge: you work as a group in the KABK workshops, supervised by accomplished instructors and teachers. Theoretical and practical training are closely related. By the end of the year, you have practiced and gained insight and proficiency in basic visual and other artistic practices. You have built a shared frame of reference, as well as explored artistic research, collaboration, and peer learning.

In the second year, the emphasis is on actively connecting your own artistic work with broader social, historical, technical, and professional contexts. In addition to your personal development, you learn how to collaborate as a professional artist: with whom, why, and how can this be set in motion? You share your own, previously acquired knowledge and experiences and use them in the development of group projects. You may participate in a range of non-mandatory courses, lectures and excursions offered within the Fine Art department and the KABK. By the end of the year, you have developed an understanding of your imaging capacities in relation to your interests and ambitions and are able to relate these insights to broad perspectives.

Year three is about professionalisation. The possibilities and conditions of professional contemporary artistry are explored and questioned, and connection is actively sought with professional worlds outside the arts. In addition to the individual studio work, you explore opportunities to do a (research) internship, residency or exchange outside the academy in the first semester. You make a plan and search for an appropriate working place. In the second semester, the internship, residency or exchange takes place. At the end, you produce a detailed report, and you present the results of your outside stay in the Fine Art Spring Exhibition. All this will serve as a starting point for your final exam project in year 4.

You design your own working process and may consult teachers from within the Fine Art department. Next to the creation of your visual/artistic work, the final exam involves a theoretical part in the form of a joint publication by the entire graduating group. You participate in the Graduation Show.
