Peter Verheul (1965, Waddinxveen) is an independent type designer, graphic designer and teacher. He graduated in 1989 at the Royal Academy of Art where he studied with Gerrit Noordzij and teaches at the same Academy since 1991.

Besides teaching at the Graphic Design department Verheul is a Core Teacher at Master Type Media. Verheul’s studio Farhill.nl (1991) is based in The Hague and embodies projects with typefaces, lettering, calligraphy, teachings and books. Among which the renowned book Dutch Type (one of the best book designs in 2004), an overview of old and new type design in The Netherlands. Together with the co-design of this book, his type family Versa took shape. A large set of fonts, containing in total forty fonts: five weights, roman and italic, serif and sans serif, in regular and condensed proportions. This type family has been published by OurType and by Verheul himself.

Other typefaces by Verheul are FF Sheriff (1996) and FF Berlin (1991) for FontShop International. Many other typefaces fulfilled intermediate applications but are not available yet. From 2006 until 2010 Peter completed several lettering projects for the Special Collections of the University of Amsterdam.

In 2008 Verheul designed a corporate set of typefaces for the Dutch Government and all its divisions, Rijksoverheid Serif and Sans, in collaboration with Just van Rossum. From that moment on there has been continuous maintenance and expansion of the set of fonts until recent time. Recently he produced together with Erik Van Blokland a set of Variable fonts containing additional weights for the usability of numerous web applications.

In 2012 Verheul completed the design of Arita Sans, a set of corporate fonts in five weights for the cosmetic firm Amore-Pacific in South Korea. This has become part of a diverse collection of different script typefaces: Hangul (Arita Dotum and Arita Buri) and Chinese (Arita Heiti). From 2012, calligraphy for official ceremonial certificates for the University of Amsterdam and Foundation P.C. Hooft.

Dutch Alphabets (2015), compiled together with Mathieu Lommen, is a lettering model book containing 46 plates featuring samples by some of today’s prominent lettering artists, type designers, calligraphers and sign painters working and/or educated in the Netherlands. Recently Verheul realized the signage at the front and back of the housing for the Royal Academy of Art. Next to his work as a designer Verheul has been part of the program board of Zefir 7, Kring BNO. Together organizing nine evenings a year (for about twenty years) with presentations of mainly designers within a broad and diverse range. For the collaborative enjoyment, food for thought, exchanging ideas, to deliver a contribution to the design community.
