Nienke Sybrandy is Studio tutor and Year head for the 2nd Year at the BA department of Interior Architecture and Furniture Design and tutor at the BA Fashion & Textile, both at the KABK.
Nienke Sybrandy (1979) is a designer based in Amsterdam. She studied textile design at the Rietveld Academy and obtained a master’s degree in applied arts from the Sandberg Institute. She has recently completed a master's in Art Education. Sybrandy initiates her own projects while also working on a freelance basis. In addition to her independent design practice, she teaches in the design department at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague.
Her work is rooted in stories – whether personal or unique histories – which form the basis for her in-depth projects. Using images and objects, Sybrandy creates new narratives that draw from extensive research, making history accessible and intelligible. A fleeting moment, such as the burst of a soap bubble, can serve as a visual motif that inspires multiple new practices and understandings.
