Mabe Bethônico

Artist

Mabe Bethônico is a Brazilian artist and researcher. In her work, she elaborates from archives and institutions such as museums and schools. Working with layers of historic material and fiction, she questions the organization of knowledge while narrating research processes. Many of these consider the mineral extraction industry and the environment destruction and socio-economic dependence it perpetuates. She produces installations, publications and lectures, assuming pedagogical formats, which incorporate her role as a teacher.

From 2001 and 2020 Mabe Bethônico taught at the Fine Art School of the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais. She currently teaches at HEAD–Genève and is a researcher at the École Supérieure d’Art Annecy Alpes, within the frame of the project “Effondrement des Alpes”. Her PhD is from The Royal College of Art, London. Her work is exhibited regularly, and is currently on view as part of the 2021 Venice Architecture Biennial. She also participated in the São Paulo Biennials 2006 and 2008, and is part of the international artists’ group World of Matter [2010-2018] (http://www.worldofmatter.net/).
