Gemma Medina Estupiñán (Spain, 1975) and Alessandra Saviotti (Italy, 1982) are both working as curators, researchers and educators internationally. Since 2012 they have been working in close collaboration with the Van Abbemuseum Eindhoven (NL), the Asociación de Arte Útil and the artist Tania Bruguera, to build the Arte Útil Archive that was the core of the exhibition “The Museum of Arte Útil” where they curated the public programme together.
Saviotti is currently a PhD candidate at the Liverpool John Moores University (UK) where she is looking at how Socially Engaged Practices and Arte Útil represent a real alternative for furthering change within the institutions of education. She is currently toolkit editor for Decentralising Political Economies (in collaboration with the Institute of Art & Technology at the LJMU, the Whitworth and the Asociación de Arte Útil), and she is a member of Art Workers Italia, the first autonomous and non-partisan association in Italy created intending to give voice to contemporary art workers.
Medina has a PhD degree in contemporary art history and humanities. She is an independent curator and art educator that researches and implements the idea of Arte Útil, collaborative practices and alternative pedagogies as other ways of instituting (rethinking art history, art institutions and archives). She participates in projects that fall outside the standard artistic discourse, bringing art closer to a non-specialised audience. Currently she is tutor at UOC and She is cofounder of Axioma Laboratorio de Mediación Artística (Canary Islands, ES). A platform encouraging the uses of art and archives as communal resources of knowledge.
