Studio practice

Femke Dekker ia a Professional Practice tutor at the BA department of Interior Architecture and Furniture Design at the KABK.

Femke Dekker is a sound practitioner and educator whose multifaceted practice explores sound as a catalyst for creation. Known by her artist moniker Loma Doom, her work blends electronic experimentalism with influences from freak folk, psychedelic music, and hardcore punk, creating spaces where intuition and understanding converge. Drawing inspiration from styles that predate the computer era, Dekker’s music invites both mental engagement and physical movement, appealing to a broad spectrum of listeners.

Her openness to diverse influences has led her to collaborate with respected DJs within the leftfield underground scene, performing at renowned venues like Salon Des Amateurs, Meakusma, and Dekmantel. Radio and archives play a central role in her practice, with her current focus on exploring the act of listening as a form of action. She holds radio residencies at Stranded FM (with her show Daydream Nation), Radio Tempo Não Pára (with Helter Skelter), Echobox (with Left of the Dial), and Mutant Radio in Tbilisi, Georgia.

As a contemporary arts educator, Dekker teaches at institutions such as Sandberg Instituut in Amsterdam, Design Academy Eindhoven, and KABK. She is also an artistic research fellow for the Visual Methodologies Collective, based in Amsterdam.

The core of Dekker’s practice – both as an artist and educator – is rooted in listening. Drawing from renowned American composer Pauline Oliveros, she believes that "listening is directing attention to what is heard, gathering meaning, interpreting, and deciding on action" (Oliveros, 1999/2022). Through improvisation and a non-linear approach, she seeks out the outliers, creating a sonic space that integrates field recordings, electronic body music, and archival materials.

In the past year, Dekker has published Listening as Research Method for Art and Design, alongside a small exhibition and performance at ReWire. She also collaborated with the art collective Werker on De Nieuwe Nieuwsmarkt, addressing the international housing crisis, which included essays by Nur Horsanalı. Additionally, she participated in group exhibitions such as New Mother Sculptures at the Cobra Museum in Amstelveen and the duo show Open Field at Nest with artist Elsmarijn Bruys.
