Mayra Sérgio (Rio de Janeiro, 1984) is a Brazilian multidisciplinary visual artist based in Amsterdam. Before moving to the Netherlands in 2013 to study at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, she earned a BA in Cinema Studies and worked as a set designer in Brazil. Alongside her artistic practice, she has been teaching at KABK since 2021. She previously co-taught Entangled Resources with Marie Ilse Bourlanges and recently developed the new course Ceramic Playground.
Mayra's multidisciplinary practice spans sculpture, installation, painting and performance. She explores the relationship between material, history and representation, investigating how landscapes, bodies and objects carry the legacies of colonialism and extraction. She is especially interested in the way material failure can become a site of meaning. Students working with Mayra are encouraged to cultivate curiosity, embrace material experimentation as a form of inquiry, and develop a creative practice that is both conceptually grounded and personally driven.
