Submit your application by 23 May for the opportunity to be supported by a Research Group while you develop a research project and work collaboratively with your colleagues, in monthly meetings, on a range of initiatives and interventions that respond to the central imperative of the Design and the Deep Future research project.

Successful applicants will have 0,2 fte added to their contracts.

Design and the Deep Future

The project explores the ways in which design and art can contribute to a more nuanced understanding of climate justice, planetary degradation and the loss of biodiversity. Topics and concepts include, but are not restricted to:

• Geological time and non-human timescales
• Infrastructures of waste and trash
• Repair and re-use
• Matter and materials
• Space junk
• Digital waste
• Plastics and microplastics
• Toxicity and contamination
• Care and caretaking
• Climate imaginaries

The collective aspects of the group include creating a glossary of key terms, an open-source library of references and resources, making essays (text, audio, visual and video), and developing and explicating new methods for researching this topic and for embedding it in education at KABK. The Group’s work is shared via a conference (Fault Lines), a publication, and online platform.

Who Can Apply

Staff members, tutors, heads, and workshop instructors from all across the KABK (both in Design and in Fine Arts) are invited to apply, provided that they will be employed at the KABK for the full duration of the Group, September 2022 - June 2023.

If you are selected for the Group you will be expected to attend all monthly gatherings, which take place on Fridays 11.00-17.00, and use the time in between sessions to further develop your individual projects. Your appointments will be increased by 0,2 fte over the course of 10 months.
For freelance tutors, equivalent provision will be made.

The deadline for applications (in English) is midnight, Monday 23 May, 2022.

2. Outline of the scope and focus of the proposed individual research project (max. 3 A4):

• Research question, and 5-10 keywords;
• Relevance and urgency of the project and its connection to the Design and the Deep Future project theme;
• Discourses and practices that the project seeks to enrich;
• Location of sources or sites of fieldwork;
• Research methods to be used;
• Theoretical framework;
• Plans for how to integrate this research into teaching at KABK;
• Bibliography of cited references.
