On March 16th, the new Minister of Education, Culture and Science, Rianne Letschert, visited the KABK to receive a report on the future of arts education in the Netherlands.
New perspectives in the cultural field
The research for the report was initiated due to major changes in the professional field. Sustainability calls for new perspectives, while art and culture are increasingly being recognized as essential to well-being, democracy, and society.
A tour of the vibrant academy
During the visit, the minister toured the textile workshop, where Joost Post, Textile lecturer, together with workshop instructor Tardia Page and students, presented their project — the sheep. This radical, upcoming project focuses on the entire textile process rather than just the end result. In fact, students will soon be travelling to Texel to meet their sheep and witness the creation of wool from start to finish.
In the wood workshop, the minister then attended a presentation by third-year graphic design student Luca Szenthe about her current project, which centers on the experience of voting.
Finally, Ingrid Grunwald, coordinator of the Graphic Design program, shared how students are prepared by the academy for life after graduation, into the professional world and beyond.
