KABK Students and NWO Collaborate on a Greener Future

28 May 2026

The Royal Academy of Art (KABK) and the Dutch Research Council (NWO) are continuing their successful collaboration. Over the next three years, KABK students will work alongside NWO scientists on innovative research projects.

The central themes include horticulture, agriculture, and the Green Research Programme. This programme lays the foundation for sustainable production and processing chains in agriculture and horticulture, contributing to the development of a circular economy with a focus on soil health, high-quality crops, and healthy nutrition. The Green Programme falls under the top sectors Agri & Food and Horticulture & Starting Materials.

Meeting and Inspiration

On 2 April 2026, representatives from NWO and heads of various bachelor’s and master’s programmes at KABK came together. During this meeting, they discussed opportunities for further collaboration. The visitors were then given a tour of the academy’s garden, the Colour Lab, and the Alternative Photography workshop.

Meaningful Results

Previous collaborations between KABK students and NWO scientists have demonstrated that the interaction between art and science yields valuable results. Presentations at the NWO Life scientific conference in Egmond aan Zee and in Paradise attracted a wide audience and showcased the power of interdisciplinary research. By continuing this collaboration, KABK can demonstrate how artists and designers can reflect on socially relevant themes.

Future Perspective

The coming years will be marked by deepening and innovation. Student teams from the Bachelors ArtScience, Fine Arts, Interactive Media Design and Photography will work with scientists on projects that contribute sustainable solutions to current challenges. With this, KABK reaffirms its role as an academy that connects art, science, and society.
