Lena Holzer

Visiting Tutor

Lena Holzer is an artist and designer living and working between the Netherlands and Austria. She graduated from the MA program Photography & Society at the KABK Royal Academy of Art, The Hague and from the BA program in design at the Free University Bolzano. As a teacher she is involved both in the MA Photography & Society at the KABK Royal Academy of Art, The Hague and in the department for Applied Photography and Time-based Media at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna.

Using mainly photography and writing, she researches the relations between social constructs and the individual. Within this framework she focuses in particular on subjectivity, pleasure and intimacy. How do we reveal sensations and desires and how do we hide them - from ourselves, from people close to us and from society at large - and why? She poses these questions against the backdrop of her personal relationships. In the process of making her work, she creates settings that challenge the limits of her psychological comfort zone.
