The publication Products of a Thinking Hand with work by American type designer Cyrus Highsmith accompanied the homonymous exhibition on show in the Galleries of the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (KABK) from Friday 9 March to Wednesday 28 March 2018.
Highsmith is the laureate of the Gerrit Noordzij Prize, an international award for typography and font design that is given to a successful designer by the Royal Academy of Art. Highsmith’s show presented some of his recent works and the publication was made especially for this occasion by the Type and Media department.
‘I have always loved to draw. When I first encountered type design, I discovered a very pure form of drawing. It’s about contour, and edges, and, most of all, shapes. Black and white shapes. For me, this is drawing distilled down to its essence.’
The publication, designed by Erik van Blokland and Peter Verheul and edited by Marja van der Burgh, documents Cyrus’ work — his type design as well as his sketches and drawings, and presents essays by David Berlow, Indra Kupferschmid and Jan Middendorp on the work of Cyrus Highsmith.
Produced in a limited number of copies, the book is available for purchase at the Library of the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague.
