Nature poem by Chris van Geel from the collection Het Zinrijk:
De mist loopt met me op, de wind loopt mij vooruit,
De mist loopt met me op, de wind loopt mij vooruit,
de minste boom staat te berusten,
het is de moeite niet te zijn vergeten wat
ik vroeger al vergat en toch is dit
wat ik bezit en mij omsluiten mij bezat.
Marjan Brandsma
18 November 1962 – 27 March 2025
Tutor theory, art history and graphic design.
For 28 years, Marjan Brandsma was a signature part of the Graphic Design department at the Royal Academy of Art. With full commitment and dedication for her work, she shared her knowledge of art history and graphic design. She had a special talent for connecting the past with the present, theory with practice, and art with society in a way that was clear and easy to understand.
She gave generations of students valuable lessons, examples, and feedback. As a theory teacher, a writing coach, and as a guide with visits to galleries, museums, and special buildings in the Randstad, she made a lasting impact. Hundreds of former students carry her lessons with them in their careers and lives. Her sharp mind, humor, and ability to teach students to look, think, and feel in a deeper way will resonate through generations of designers for many years.
On behalf of the entire Graphic Design department, as well as all students, teachers, and colleagues past and present, we send our thoughts to Marjan and her loved ones.
Marjan will always be remembered and appreciated for her great contribution to art education and the many personal lives she touched with her knowledge and dedication.
A condolence book will be available in the kabk library for students, tutors, and staff to leave a message, or any other expression of sympathy they wish to contribute. Find the condolence register online here.

During Marjan’s illness, the department created a tribute video in her honor. The video was made on 4 February 2025, and personally delivered to Marjan; a very special moment. She received it with pride, feeling truly blessed and recognized for the role she played for so many years.
The video and post-production were done by Donna West, an alum of the Graphic Design department and a former student of Marjan.
