28 November 2024

The winners of the Piket Art Prizes 2024 were announced this month at Theater aan het Spui in The Hague. Alum Ellen Yiu (Fine Arts, 2021) won the prize in the Painting category. Congratulations Ellen!

The other two winners are Demi Bawon (Dance) and Patsy Kroonenberg (Theatre). All three winners will receive a cash prize of 6,000 euros and a unique work of art, the Hammer, designed and created by artist Joep van Lieshout. The Piket Jury Prize goes to Jane Huldman (former project leader Stroom Den Haag). The Piket Art Prizes are awarded annually to promising young, professional artists in the field of painting, dance and theatre.

The jury about Ellen's work: "Ellen's vulnerable and sensitive installations, sometimes with unconventional elements such as hair, medicines and plant material, appeal to the viewer in many ways: not only visually and tactilely, but also emotionally," according to professional jury members Pietertje van Splunter (artist and co-founder of the artists' initiative Quartair) and Johan Gustavsson (Experimental Art Space 1646, lecturer at KABK and curator of Prospects).

About the Piket Art Prizes

Since 2014, the Piket Art Prizes have been awarded to young artists who have a connection with The Hague, because they have flourished there or because their work makes a stimulating contribution to the cultural climate of The Hague. Namesake Frederik Hendrik Piket (1927-2011), lawyer and member of the Senate for the CHU (later CDA), was a great lover of art and culture. After his death, a foundation was established that aims to annually stimulate promising, professional artists up to and including 30 years of age with the Piket Art Prizes.
