'Notes on Method: close narration, critical fabulation, speculative fiction, word-tools and the fugitive text; creative speculations on the works of Saidiya Hartman, Octavia Butler, Audre Lorde and Sara Ahmed'

We’re living in a period where language has gained absolute power in our society. More than ever, multitudes are inhabiting the current ‘no man’s land zone’ of social media. Billions of individuals, either perpetrating or being exposed to racial hatred, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, the myth of progress, the myth of happiness… all spreading faster than the Coronavirus, empowered by a handful of silicon valley tech giants with their mass surveillance and corruption practices that amount to the greatest propaganda machine in history! Multitudes fuelled by fossil fuel, blinded by ‘engagement’ disguised as freedom of speech!

Language plays a phenomenal role both in the spreading of violence and the building of resistance.
In this seminar we take a close look on how the works of these four outstanding feminist writers can inform us on our everyday struggle to fight violence, and how their methodologies and vocabulary can help us develop our own creative writing.

Bio - Luanda Casella (São Paulo, 1976) is a writer and performer. Blending rhetoric with irony, her work exposes language constructions, exploring unreliable narration in fiction and in everyday communication.

Her research focuses broadly on the role of literature in the development of critical thinking; the ways individuals relate to narratives in order to create a sense of identity, to form their opinion of the world and ultimately protect themselves.

Luanda’s work has been shown in venues and festivals around the world such as Spielart (Munich), Edinburgh International Festival, Het TheaterFestival (Gent), or Kaserne (Basel). With her last piece Short of Lying she won the Sabam writing prize at Theater aan Zee (TAZ Oostende).
