Dropping Defence opening event - exhibition & workshops

Dropping Defence is a “design by research” project initiated by the Fort 1881 and the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (KABK). 27 fourth-year students of the Interior Architecture and Furniture Design department reinterpreted the sustainable, autarkic character of the fortress - a National Historic Landmark -, unlocking it to visitors and surroundings.

During the opening event on the 18th of December at Fort 1881, students present the results of their research by means of an exhibition and a number of workshops, open to young and old alike.

In workshops, the students re-ignite the historic bakery in the Fort, propose new applications for the unique water purification installation and salt formation on the walls of the fortress. The specific climate in the Fort proved to be an excellent condition to start a mushroom farm.
