Alum Filipp Groubnov wins award in Global Design Graduate Show 2023

1 November 2023

Alum Filipp Groubnov (MA ArtScience, 2023) has won the Digital Arts category in the Global Design Graduate Show 2023. The Global Design Graduate Show is organised by Arts Thread in collaboration with Gucci.

This is the fourth edition of the show which saw over 5000 students enter their work, continually surpassing previous years. Over the last 4 years, hundreds of graduates have gained employment or launched their own brands thanks to this proactive initiative - making it the biggest online showcase of graduating artists & designers worldwide. All winners will have their work showcased in a virtual gallery hosted by Google Arts & Culture. The collaboration with Google Arts & Culture means that students’ work will reach a further audience which can help launch their independent businesses or gain employment within the creative industries.

Filipp about his work 'Pochva': "The soil that you see in front of you was brought in from the Bela- rusian village “Zhirovichi”, the village of my grandparents. It was collected near the Spring of holy water. Around the spring the lush vegetation creates a place of tranquility, a place where the biblical myths breathe through the matter of the landscape. The “pochva” is alive. It houses billions of living beings - traces of the distant landscape. The organisms in the soil are breathing, feeding, metabolising. Their vitality produces electrical charge.

Since the Russian invasion into Ukraine I have not been able to return to Belarus. The village of my grandparents, along with it’s Holy Spring are now only a memory. The memory - shared like a collective hallucination of a promised land. A land, existing on a different scale of time, eternally near and distant. A memory land, a promise, a desire. The dirty matter, pochva buzzing with unheard sounds of life.

The animated vibrations of the matter produce dreams and desires. The digits, executable rituals in the form of a code produce a landscape. The landscape was re-constructed from my memory, somewhere in between imagination and reality. A dream of soil matter, a promised land embedded into the physical substance."

About Global Design Graduate Show

The Global Design Graduate Show is officially the world’s largest online showcase of graduating artists & designers worldwide. Arts Thread launched the first ever online Global Design Graduate Show in collaboration with Gucci in April 2020, as a response to all of the end of year show cancellations due to the pandemic. This initiative has now become an annual event supported by over 150 independent expert judges from many leading brands worldwide, who are invited to select the winners from the thousands of graduating creatives entering every year. In the first four initiatives over 20,000 undergraduates, graduates and postgraduates from over 100 countries have uploaded their final year projects. Over the first 4 years, over 700,000 votes have been cast in the public vote.
