Exhibition IDOL by Fine Arts alum Obbe van der Weide at Pulchri Studio

November 19th at 17.00h the solo show 'IDOL' of Obbe van der Weide (BA Fine Arts, 2022) opens in the Pulchri studio Tuingallerie. As a series of exhibitions throughout the year, Pulchri Studio selects graduates of various art academies throughout the Netherlands and offers them a free membership and an exhibition to present themselves in our gallery.

Obbe van der Weide about his work: "We live in a time of idolisation; becoming spectators and damaging our physical connection to the body. What happens when our connection between body and mind is disrupted? We seem constantly distracted by our persona and digital existence. My art is aware of commercial presentation and stems from a fear of alienation and body dysphoria caused by commercial and idealistic formatting.

For my practice, it is important to see the utility of embodying fears and emotions and shared body awareness. It made me interested in the role of a monster; using the body strategically to communicate negative byproducts of the times we live in. To externalise the things that exist at the edge of my consciousness. To create a body language. This works purifying for me and serves as a reflection on sublimation in society."

"IDOL"

"An image or representation of a god used as an object of worship. My idols are hypothetical objects of worship, with digital commerce as our god. It poses the question whether digital commerce is a modern god, and what morals and philosophies are entailed by this new god." - Obbe van der Weide
