In the fall of 2013, the theme of the Studium Generale lectures is ‘Five Women’, with lectures by Femmy Otten, Joanna van der Zanden, Andrea Stultiens, Janneke Wesseling and Mirjam Westen. The programme will continue in the spring of 2014 with the theme ‘Five Men’.
On 10 September 2013 Janneke Wesseling received her doctoral degree for the dissertation The perfect observer. The experience of the artwork and the actuality of reception aesthetics.
The main theme of the dissertation is the interaction between observer and artwork. What happens between an observer and an artwork? How do we experience meaning in an artwork? How can the interpretation process be understood and analysed? The research is aimed at deepening and problematising notions put forward by reception aesthetics. To better understand the exchange between observer and artworks, the dissertation introduces new theoretical notions. The research is based on a long-term art critical practice and personal experience of artworks.
