In the last few months of 2020 the KABK Design Lectorate has been immersed in exploring the various facets of walking as a research method. This is part of a larger project aimed at surfacing research methods particular to art and design and revealing how they are used within the KABK learning community and beyond.

On December 17, 2020, we celebrated the launch of our publication Walking: A Research Method in Art and Design. We're happy to share that the publication can now be found on Issuu!

Already a familiar and well-theorized qualitative research methodology in the social sciences, especially geography, in recent years the act of walking has been adopted and adapted by those engaging in research in and through the arts.

Through essays, interviews, poetry and visual contributions the publication looks at the many ways that tutors and students at the KABK engage with walking in their research practice, both as a way to explore their inner, mental landscapes and also to observe, or immerse themselves in the social and physical aspects of their surroundings, be they urban, rural, digital or imagined, or those indeterminate spaces in between.

Contributions by Christian Ernsten, Nick Shepherd and Dirk-Jan Visser, Krijn Christiaansen en Cathelijne Montens, Wim Cuyvers, Marcin Liminowicz, Rebecca Dunne, Vibeke Mascini, Thorir Freyr Hoskuldsson, Sophie van Romburgh, Budhaditya Chattopadhyay, Daan Jensen, Arina Livadari, Louise Spisser, Sarah Gluschitz, Justine Corrijn, Anna Arov, Lulu van Dijck and Zhao Zhou.
