3D Lab
In the KABK’s 3D Lab, students are invited to explore how to create a physical object from a digital model, through the use of digital fabrication methods like 3D printing, lasercutting or CNC milling. It is also possible to create a digital model from a physical object, through the use of 3D scanning methods. We try to create a playground where students feel free to experiment with the machines and to challenge themselves to learn the computer programs that are needed to work with the machines.
What you can do at the 3D Lab
From digital to physical:
Depending on the chosen digital fabrication method, you can create tangible products or components from plastic, wood or foam. Once you have a digital model, the next step in the process is to generate an instruction-file (gcode) that the machine needs in order to fabricate the object. This instruction-file can be generated with CAM-software. For 3D printing, such software is called a 'slicer'.
From physical to digital:
Create a digital 3D model from an existing object (or person) with 3D scanning methods. Unique to the 3D Lab is the Artec EVA, a handheld 3D scanner that makes accurate 3D models of medium-sized objects.
The 3D scanner scans the object at high resolution and transforms the scan into digital data, which can then be used in many applications in the digital world. Another 3D scanning method is photogrammetry.
Simply using your phone or DSLR camera, you take pictures from various viewpoints around the object. You subsequently reconstruct a digital 3D model from these pictures using photogrammetry software. This software is available at the computers in the 3D Lab.
Education:
Workshop instructors are available for consultations about which material and/or technology is best to use in a project. For those interested, the KABK offers an IST course (3D Lab 3.0) that teaches students to draw in 3D modelling software and introduces them to the possibilities provided by the various machines in the 3D Lab.
