A conversation with alumna Johanna Günzl

An in-depth conversation with alumna Johanna Günzl about her graduation project ‘Micro Matters’.
What is designer’s action space when tackling globally dispersed and abstract problems like microplastic pollution?

With her design ‘Micro Matters’ Johanna Gunzl created a learning environment in which we discover how we produce microplastics and cause their dispersion. The final design is an air purifier having from the ceiling, a balloon with the working mechanism of a lung. As it senses microplastics in the dust, it starts to hyperventilate showing the need to clean the air.

Sound performance - Dreipäpstejahr

With NLN students Lance Laoyan and Marcin Liminowicz.

Live music performance with sounds based on two frequencies that can be recognised as a noise pollution in the North Sea and two frequencies that mammals are using to communicate with each other.

Dreipäpstejahr [Lance, Eline, Yana, Marcin] is a concept of sound & noise based on constant change. While playing we are mixing both environments — man & nature made. With the sourced data we programmed a “midi” instrument that is not fully predictable.

Time: 13:00 (first session) and 15.00 (second session)
Location: Gallery 3

Techweek presentation

Outcomes from the participation of NLN students at Techweek in Gallery 3.
The Techweek is organised yearly at the Graphic Design department. Every year, around 8 guest tutors are invited to give a four-day long workshop on a tech-influenced subject they are experienced in. They share their expertise with our students, who are signing up for the workshop of their choice. After 4 days the end results are presented to each other and to the regular tutor team.
