The first year of the bachelor’s degree programme is called the propaedeutic phase. One of its functions is to give the Royal Academy of Art the opportunity to determine whether a student will be able to complete their study successfully. To this end, each student receives a Binding Study Recommendation (BSR) at the end of their first year of study at the KABK.

Binding study recommendation: 45 EC minimum in 1st year of study*

A student who receives a negative recommendation will not be allowed to continue their studies and is not eligible to enrol again in the same degree programme (CROHO) at the Royal Academy of Art. A binding negative recommendation is given to students who have obtained less than 45 EC at the end of their first year of enrolment.

Students whose study progress is impeded due to extenuating circumstances (personal, health or family circumstances for example), should inform the student counsellor about these circumstances as soon as possible. Only if these circumstances are established by the student counsellor, within a confidential framework, can they be taken into account when the binding study recommendations are issued.

For more information on the binding study recommendation regulations, consult chapter 6 of the Education and Examination Regulations (bachelor's programmes) of the Royal Academy of Art.

MoMi Study Progress Monitoring for all non-EU/EEA students (Master and Bachelor)

Are you an international non-EU/EEA student, residing in The Netherlands with a residence permit for study purposes? According to the Modern Migration Policy Act (MoMi), the Royal Academy of Art is obliged to monitor your study progress.

Your residence permit is valid for the duration of your education. You keep this residence permit if you obtain at least 50% of the required credits for each academic year. In other words, you must obtain at least 30 of the 60 EC per academic year.

Is your study progress not sufficient? The school must then report this to the IND and your residence permit will be revoked.

(Exchange students who stay in The Netherlands for only a short period of time (a year or less) are exempted from the study progress monitoring).

Students whose study progress is impeded due to extenuating circumstances (personal, health or family circumstances for example), should inform the student counsellor about these circumstances as soon as possible. Only if these circumstances are established by the student counsellor, within a confidential framework, can we report this to the IND and insufficient study results might be overlooked.
