On 26 June 2008, Maria Papanikolaou received the KABK Thesis Award for her thesis Activist Art. The Art of Resisting, Art Resisting. Maria Papanikolaou graduated from the Fine Arts department.
The jury consisted of external member Edwin Jacobs, director of Museum De Lakenhal, and from the Royal Academy of Art Caroline de Lint, teacher graphic design and Jan van der Pol, lecturer at the Fine Arts department. The jury was chaired by professor Janneke Wesseling.
