Critical Practice

Winnie Koekelbergh is team leader of the Critical Practice Group and tutor Critical Practice at the Painting & Printmaking section of the Bachelor Fine Arts programme at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (KABK).

Her interest in visual art was triggered during her exchange year in Mexico City. The artworks of the Mexican muralists – amongst others – fascinated her. Back home she decided to study Art History at Leiden University. Postcolonial discourse and art of the Global South attracted her interest.

After graduating she got a job as coordinator of the artistic productions at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht. She assisted many artists and thus got closely acquainted with the artistic process.

Later on, she switched focus to acquire experience in exhibition platforms and worked as (assistant) curator at Z33 in Hasselt and the Gemeentelijk Museum Schiedam.

Her main interest, however, is in research and theory and the dialogue about them. Her own research comprises colonialism and the (im)possibilities of decolonisation.
