Thomas Vailly

Design tutor (MID), Studio tutor (IAFD)

I research, advise and teach in the field of materials for design focusing on emerging (bio)- materials, processes, and (circular)-systems. My expertise includes but is not limited to circular, bio-based, biodegradable materials for products, packaging, vehicles, and architecture.

Among other things, I am using design tools and teaching methodologies, with an emphasis on :

  • (sustainable) system thinking: mapping, tracing, cross-section
  • Material narratives, Aesthetical and Emotional Values of materials and design
  • Conceptual design, positioning in design, prospective design, and future scenarios
  • Materials for design (bio-plastic, bio-composite, circular materials,...)

On this and related topics, I have educated bachelor and master students (8 years) in 3 design departments. I supervised graduation projects, gave lectures and workshops.

Alongside my activities as an educator, I am active as a practice-based design researcher (www.studiothomasvailly.com). I work as well as a material consultant for various industries ranging from plastic producers (ELHO) to cosmetic luxury brands (Lancôme, LVMH,...). My design projects and materials have been awarded and shown in numerous international museums.
