In the course of more than forty years Ronald van Tienhoven has developed a multifaceted art practice. His own work runs parallel with his endeavors as curator, teacher, speaker, and consultant in the art and design world.

Between 1993 and 1998 he was adviser and curator for the Mondriaan Foundation. Between 1994-2000, he advised and curated several public projects and exhibitions for Stroom in Den Haag. From 2011 onward, his projects in the public realm focus on researching the relationship between the status of a given context and its deeper socio-historical layers and peripheries. This has culminated between 2012-2016 in 07:05:1945:, a project on the Dam square in Amsterdam.

07:05:1945: addressed the complexities and contradictions of human conflict, historic fictions and facts, and the way globalized visual culture influences human perception. This project has led to an invitation from Innsbruck University (AT) to develop a visual response, or annex, to a controversial memorial from 1927 on the university premises, in the framework of Innsbruck university’s 350-year jubilee in 2019.

In the coming years he will continue his R&D and production of a series of multimedia projects related to the technology and metaphysics of longevity and immortality, titled The Age of Old/Methuselah Unbound. He will continue his forays into Techno-Animism and its (fictional) manifestations, specifically the potential relationship between (Techno-) Animism and the Internet of Things. He is currently preparing a multimedia project focusing on the Black Sea region, its troubled history, and present border conflicts.

He has taught extensively both in the Netherlands and abroad. Between 2002-2014 he taught at the Eindhoven University of Technology in the Faculty of Industrial Design and twice headed a sub-department there: The Play department (2008-2010) and Next Nature Lab (2013-2014). He is currently leading a lecturer programme at the AKI Academy in Enschede for the department Crossmedia Design.
