‘Frame or be framed’ is a deep-rooted motif that runs through Puck Verkade’s (1987, The Netherlands) video based practice as an inquiry into the complexities of representation. How do these complexities inform gendered and racialized biases in everyday interpersonal encounters? How are they mediated and visualised in order to perpetuate social inequalities?

After receiving her BFA from the Royal Academy of Art (KABK), Verkade’s work has been shown at various institutions, such as the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag and Showroom MAMA, Rotterdam. She recently completed an MFA in Fine Art at Goldsmiths, London. Puck Verkade lives and works in London, where she has been selected as a resident artist at Sarabande for 2017-2018.

Puck Verkade is a video and installation artist based in London. Originally from the Netherlands, she studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, and then Goldsmiths, London. In 2017-18 she is a resident of The Lee Alexander McQueen Foundation, London.

Puck’s work focuses on the complexities of gendered and racial framing within contemporary culture, and how these biases are visualized, mediated, and perpetuated. Digging through generational layers of visual culture tropes has led Verkade to use humor and irony as an entry into the stickiness of subjectivity. A continuous feed of embodied explorations results in speculative constructions composed of re-appropriated found footage, sampled pop music, low res animations and personal recordings. These unfold in site specific video and sculptural installations.

Recent shows include Durst Britt Mayhew, and Gemeentemuseum, both The Hague; After School Special, Milwaukee; Dye House 451, London; and Museum HIlversum, Hilversum.
