Babak Afrassiabi

Studio practice

Babak Afrassiabi is a core tutor for studio practice at the MA Artistic Research programme at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (KABK).

Since 2004, artist Babak Afrassiabi has worked in collaboration with Nasrin Tabatabai to produce Pages, a bilingual (Farsi / English) magazine. This has now expanded into many projects and exhibitions, defined mostly by their combinations of different media and materials, often brought together as a result of long-term research. Linking these works is an attempt to articulate the undecidable space between art and its historical conditions. The recurring question, especially in more recent works, has related to the technological and material place of the archive in defining this juncture between politics, history and the practice of art. The Pages platform can be found online: https://www.pagesmagazine.net.

The couple’s solo and group exhibitions are ,among others: Between the Sun and the Moon, Lahore Biennial, Lahore, Pakistan; Crude, Art Jameel, Dubai, UAE; Asia Time, 5th Guangzhoi triennial, Guangzhoi, China; Publishing as an Artistic Toolbox, Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna, Austria; Gestures and Archives of the Present, Genealogies of the Future, Taipei Biennial, Taipei, Taiwan; Between East and West: A Gulf, Venice Architecture Biennial; Publishing Against the Grain, Pitzer Gallery, Claremont, CA, USA; Artistic Gestures and Practices of Thought, HKW, Berlin; Alternate Voices, Zeitz Museum of Contemporary art Africa, Cape Town, South Africa; 11th Gwangju Biennial, Gwangju, South Korea; 5th Guangzhou Triennale/ First Asia biennial, China, (2015-2016); The Past, The Present, The Possible, 12 Sharjah Biennial, Sharjah, UAE, (2015); Moderation, Witte de With Institute Rotterdam, (2014); Muslim Mulliqi Prize 2014; Seep, Chisenhale, London, and MACBA, Barcelona (2012); Untitled, 12th Istanbul Biennial (2011); The Isle, MAK Center/ Schindler House, Los Angeles (2009); Magazines, Documenta 12, Kassel (2007).
