They started the competition at the beginning of April 2020 with an introduction of veteran and White Carnation Award winner 2019 Maaike Hoogewoning and former jury member Dayrohn Wiesken. The artists were given two months to come up with a concept for the jury day on June 30th.
Jury day design contest
During the jury day on Tuesday, 30 June 2020, all artists presented their concepts to the five members of the jury: Angelien Eijsink, Jan Rijken, Joost Roozekrans, Stef Fridael and Jaap Willem Kleijwegt.
Zsofia Kollar was finally chosen as the winner. Her design will be presented to the winner of the White Carnation Prize 2020 on 22 October during the second Veterans' Day.
‘It is a special challenge to create a meaningful object for someone who has contributed to our freedom and security while risking their life. For me, freedom means security and trust; when individuals have the right of self- expression and when such rights guarantee the growth of a society and stimulate individual development. Freedom is acceptance and growth.’
The White Carnation Award (Witte Anjer Prijs)
The White Carnation (Witte Anjer) was introduced in the Netherlands in 2005, as an expression of appreciation for Dutch veterans who have been sent to peace missions in the past and present. In 2018, the National Committee Veterans' Day established the White Carnation Award (Witte Anjer Prijs) to be awarded annually to someone who plays a special role in the lives of veterans.

Maria Beaumaster (CA) graduated in 2019 from the bachelor Interior Architecture & Furniture Design (specialisation Furniture Design).
‘I like to hear and understand stories from people I don't know. By participating in this competition I hope to learn more about the emotions and motivations of veterans'.’

‘I have the feeling that we never really hear the stories of veterans in their entirety.’
Zsofia Kollar (HU) graduated in 2017 from the bachelor Interior Architecture & Furniture Design (specialisation Furniture Design).
‘I participate in this competition because I understand the importance of appreciation and recognition of veterans. This in combination with creating a work of art for an event where art is usually hard to find, really appealed to me.’

‘The reason that I am taking part in this competition is the curiosity about the subject and the emotions that go with it.’

‘I think there is a certain degree of humanistic ethics in the work of veterans. Something that transcends country or nationality.’

‘My initial motivation to enter this competition comes from the object we have to design: An award. From a designer's perspective this is a special task because it is not the object, but an object that is part of a ritual. Next to that I also get the possibility to deepen my knowledge in the context, where this object relates to'.

The final design for the Witte Anjer Award 2020
Designer Zsofia Kollar on the concept and final design of the Witte Anjer Prize 2020.
The symbol of the white carnation is clearly depicted on Zsofia's design. The carnation originates from a circular rod bearing fingerprints of veterans, appending the prize with a personal touch. The object is made of a heavy metal and weighs about 5kg. The object's heavy weight symbolises the importance of the missions veterans carry out and the 'weight' they often carry afterwards.
