Study programme

The two-year, English-taught Master’s programme Photography & Society reflects its core strengths: collaboration, research, and impact. Through studios, workshops, seminars, and other peer learning structures, you will be supported in seeking and finding your own answers, regardless of the shifts in the social and photographic landscape.

Photography & Society also includes practical assignments that connect theory with real-world application. Positioned in The Hague, close to various ministries and international organisations, the academy allows you to engage with the political, economic, and cultural arenas, enriching your experience and expanding your professional opportunities.

Programme structure

Year 1
In your first year, you'll dive deep into the practice of photography through experimentation, questioning, play, and dialogue. These elements will serve as the foundation of your creative process. Four studios are structured over two semesters, each centred around research themes that respond to the evolving landscape of the field. Theory seminars and workshops will support your major studio work, helping to deepen your understanding and enhance your creative practice.

Year 2
The Master Project, which combines practical work with a written thesis, is a yearlong journey spanning the two semesters of your second year. During this time, you will create a substantial body of work that integrates your individual practice and theory, while positioning both yourself and your work within a broader societal context.

The final project showcases a synthesis of reflexive, conceptual, practical, and professional skills. It merges analytical study with creative practice, culminating in a graduation show and public presentation, marking the moment your work enters society.
