Part-time programme Amalgam

The BA Fine Arts part-time programme, also called Amalgam, is a four-year study trajectory for students who want to develop an artistic practice alongside an existing professional career and/or life experience. Classes take place two days per week, allowing you to combine your studies with work and other responsibilities. The name Amalgam reflects the character of the programme: different forms of knowledge, experience and practice are brought together rather than kept separate. Students enter the programme from a wide range of backgrounds and are encouraged to use their existing knowledge as part of their artistic development: what you already know is not baggage to leave at the door. It can become material.

Throughout the four years, you gradually move from orientation and experimentation toward an increasingly independent and professionally situated artistic practice. Because the programme is part-time, the trajectory is intentionally spread over four years, giving you time to experiment, unlearn and learn, develop ideas, and build a practice alongside your life outside the academy. A part-time programme does not mean a partial practice.

The programme combines studio practice, theory and professional field orientation. You work both individually and collectively, and encounter different materials, techniques, workshops, artistic approaches and professional contexts. Self-initiated projects become increasingly important as the programme progresses. At the end of the four-year trajectory, you graduate with the same Bachelor of Fine Arts degree as students in the full-time Fine Arts programme.

Why choose Fine Arts (part-time)

Amalgam may be a good fit for you if you already have professional and/or life experience and want to develop an artistic practice without stepping away entirely from the rest of your life. The programme asks for a mature and self-directed approach to learning. You should be interested in both individual and collaborative work, willing to reflect critically on your own making and that of others, and open to developing projects that connect artistic practice with broader social and professional contexts. Amalgam is particularly suited to students who see their previous experiences not as something separate from art school, but as material that can enter, challenge and expand their artistic practice.

Please note that:

  • The part-time programme is not open to exchange students.
  • A residence permit for part-time students cannot be arranged by the KABK.
Therefore non-EU/EEA candidates are advised to apply for the full-time Fine Arts programme.
