Part-time Fine Arts
The BA Fine Arts part-time program, also called Amalgam, is a new educational path where non-artistic and artistic approaches merge in a trajectory intended for participants who already have established professional and/or life experience. This study is designed to be combined with a part-time job or occupation, with classes two days per week. Applicants should be interested in collaborative outcomes.
Sylvia Beijen-Schotman:
“My KABK education taught me to see the endless possibilities on the way to a goal. It has given me a mental agility in everything I do. In my consulting room, confronted with unspeakable sadness but also elusive beauty, visual language is an instrument for communicating. Making art is using craftsmanship to convey a story and at KABK I learned to portray such stories. In my own teaching, I use "picture voicing" to portray students' stories - a highway to deep self-reflection.”
At the end of a four-year study, participants are awarded the same bachelor diploma as their full-time peers. During the program, you will expand your artistic capabilities and actively develop connections between art and society. We move from learning core creative skills in the KABK workshops to theoretical and research-based skills in and outside the academy—allowing you to explore your possibilities within new and varied contexts.
Why choose Fine Arts (part-time)
- You feel urged to develop your artistic skills and acquire essential theoretical knowledge.
- You feel that art and creativity are core values within today's society.
- You are available to be present at KABK on Thursdays and Fridays, with moments of self-study for the rest of the week.
- You are committed to expanding your horizons and investigating the merging of creativity, community, and daily labor.
- You have a mature approach to both group- and individual learning and can initiate self-led projects.
- You don't mind (or even like!) using different writing techniques to reflect on your own making and those of your classmates.
- You love to study in an international environment, and you thrive being among students stemming from other cultures, gender identities, or favorite artists than your own.
- You appreciate the value of collaborative work and like contributing to and taking part in discussions.
Please note that:
- The part-time programme is not open to exchange students.
- A residence permit for part-time students cannot be arranged by the KABK.
Therefore non-EU/EEA candidates are welcome to apply for the full-time Fine Arts programme only.

The part-time Fine Arts trajectory amounts to 240 ECTS and lasts four academic years.
See below an overview for Years 1, 2, 3 and 4 for the part-time programme and ECTS credits for 2024-2025.
Year 1 consists of a thorough introduction to basic visual and artistic skills, techniques, and knowledge: you work as a group in the KABK workshops, supervised by accomplished instructors and teachers. Theoretical and practical training are closely related. By the end of the year, you have practiced and gained insight and proficiency in basic visual and other artistic practices. You have built a shared frame of reference, as well as explored artistic research, collaboration, and peer learning.

In the second year, the emphasis is on actively connecting your own artistic work with broader social, historical, technical, and professional contexts. In addition to your personal development, you learn how to collaborate as a professional artist: with whom, why, and how can this be set in motion? You share your own, previously acquired knowledge and experiences and use them in the development of group projects. You may participate in a range of non-mandatory courses, lectures and excursions offered within the Fine Art department and the KABK. By the end of the year, you have developed an understanding of your imaging capacities in relation to your interests and ambitions and are able to relate these insights to broad perspectives.
Year three is about professionalisation. The possibilities and conditions of professional contemporary artistry are explored and questioned, and connection is actively sought with professional worlds outside the arts. In addition to the individual studio work, you explore opportunities to do a (research) internship, residency or exchange outside the academy in the first semester. You make a plan and search for an appropriate working place. In the second semester, the internship, residency or exchange takes place. At the end, you produce a detailed report, and you present the results of your outside stay in the Fine Art Spring Exhibition. All this will serve as a starting point for your final exam project in year 4.
The aim of the final exam year is to learn to produce art at a professional level within a context that's relevant to it. You design your own working process and may consult teachers from within the Fine Art department. Next to the creation of your visual/artistic work, the final exam involves a theoretical part in the form of a joint publication by the entire graduating group. You participate in the Graduation Show.
