This course, part of the Art Research Programme, offers students from all departments the opportunity to further investigate the possibilities of imagination in documentary photography. Documentary photography can be defined as an attitude to the world around us with an implicit interest in mankind, our surroundings and current social processes. We have long passed the stage of objective representation of reality. This implies that research into the representation of content is inextricably linked to research into visual language itself.

The visual strategy and positioning of each individual student will be the focus of research in the lab.

Research Lab 2012/2013

OBJECTIVES

  • Stimulate and offer insights into the ongoing work process and related research;
  • Establish a general methodology for the organisation of work and think processes;
  • Centralise the visual strategy and positioning of the artist in relation to his/her theme;
  • Conduct research on strategies of photographers to gain insight into their methodologies;
  • Analyse and critically reflect on the image from the perspective of the maker: what are the choices? What cannot be seen? How to create a bridge between theory and practice?

FOR WHOM?

This course is intended for 3rd and 4th year students from all disciplines who work with photography in their practice. Full attendance is obligatory in order to receive study points (6 EC) towards your Individual Study Trajectory (IST). Only 10-12 students can participate in the programme. The course will be in English.

SET-UP

    The course consists of eleven half-day meetings in semester 1, with a possible extension into semester 2.

    Each meeting covers both input by the tutors (theory, suggested methodology) and student presentations. The course combines research, analysis, experimentation and production, and is concluded with a final presentation.

RESULTS

    Each student compiles a cahier in A2 format, which shows the outcome of the research in relation to the documentation of the student’s work and the work of others.

      Tutors

      The course is taught by Corinne Noordenbos, Hans Scholten and Vincent van Baar.

      is head of the photography department of the KABK since 2005. She studied at the Rietveld Academy and Rijksakademie. In the 1970’s, she positioned herself as a social-documentary photographer in the 1970s. She worked for many magazines, including Avenue and Opzij. In the 1980s, her work became more autonomous. During that time she also started teaching at the Utrecht School of the Arts, where in 1985 she became head of the department of photography.

      is a visual artist. He studied at the Academy for Art and Design Minerva in Groningen. He was co-founder and co-director of Foundation De Zaak and editor of art magazine Drukwerk De Zaak. From 1995 to 2009 he was a teacher and head of the department of Post St. Joost Photography in Breda. He currently teaches at St. Joost Academy. In 2002 he started working on the project ‘Urban Future’, reflecting on global urbanization, primarily through the medium of photography. In 2010 he started his doctoral study at PhDArts, Leiden University.

      is a graphic designer. He teaches at the KABK (photography department) and the Design Academy Eindhoven (graphic design). In addition, he is the initiator and spokesman of the BNO Zefir evenings in Theater Zeebelt and president of the jury panel of the Dutch Design Awards. Since 2008 he has been working for his own company, Buro van Baar. Prior to this, Van Baar was senior designer at Studio Dumbar and he co-founded The Hague Barlock Design.
