05/11/2015 Studium Generale lecture 'Now Eat My Script, Or Don't' - Mounira Al Solh
Treason, refuge, immigration, social escapism and language, are a few of the issues raised in Al Solh’s work, as well as in her self-initiated and collaborative projects. The use of humor is often an integral part of the work, processing and concealing trauma through laughter, and self-reflectivity.
Mounira Al Solh’s visual practice embraces video, drawing, embroidery, and performative gestures. Al Solh makes NOA (Not Only Arabic Magazine), inviting editors, artists, and relevant people to participate in each edition of the magazine, which does not get distributed, but can only be read by appointment.
Born in Beirut 1978, Mounira Al Solh studied Fine Arts at the Lebanese University of Beirut and in Amsterdam at the Rietveld Academy, and she was a resident for two years at the Rijksakademie.
Her work was part of the first Lebanese Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2007. She had solo exhibitions at Sfeir-Semler Gallery, Beirut and at Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam among other places, and group shows at the current Venice Biennale; at The New Museum, New York; Haus Der Kunst, Munich; Manifesta 8, Murcia, Spain; Kunst-Werke Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin; the 11th International Istanbul Biennial. Uriôt Prize winner at the Rijksakademie, Al Solh was nominated for de Volkskrant Award in the Netherlands in 2009. Most recently she has been shortlisted for the Abraaj Group Art Prize, 2015. She currently lives and works in Beirut and Amsterdam.
